Gillespie take off at Terminal 5

After a long and sometimes controversial planning, design and construction process, Terminal 5 at London’s Heathrow Airport was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in March 2008. Used exclusively by British Airways, the new terminal has 60 aircraft stands and capacity for 30 million passengers annually.

To meet the expectations of an increasingly sophisticated travelling public, the new Terminal provides a range of airside refreshment and retail outlets. Gillespie UK Limited was appointed by Mace, the architects and main contractors for the project, to produce key elements of the interior styling to produce a highly functional yet visually appealing passenger environment.

With extensive experience in working on high profile, time critical projects, Gillespie provided an engineered solution to the design, manufacture and installation of three large suspended curved walls for the Level 4 retail area, to accommodate branding and advertising materials. Crafted from Zerodec laminated GRG, the curved panels achieve a sweeping continuity of line and a flawless finish, in keeping with the clean and contemporary interior design. By laminating timber to the Zerodec GRG panels, Gillespie were able to provide an elegant solution to the requirement to accommodate a load-bearing capacity of 25kg/m2.

Despite the demanding logistical and design requirements, the Gillespie in-house technical staff and on-site installation team succeeded in completing the package on time and within programme.
